Anxiety Disorders

 

Anxiety disorders are those that are characterized by excessive and abnormal fear, worry and anxiety. In one recent survey

 

published in the Archives of General Psychology, it was estimated that as many as 18% of American adults suffer from at

 

least one anxiety disorder.

 

Types of anxiety disorders include:

 

  • Separation Anxiety Disorder

  • Selective Mutism

  • Specific Phobia

  • Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)

  • Panic Disorder

  • Panic Attack 

  • Agoraphobia

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

  • Substance/Medication-Induced Anxiety Disorder

  • Anxiety Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition

 

Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders

 

The typical signs and symptoms of OCD are:

 

  • Repeated intrusive and obsessive thoughts or images about a variety of things: fear of contamination by germs or dirt; fear of intruders; preoccupation with violent acts; unwanted sexual images and acts; unwanted religious thoughts (Scrupulosity: Religious Obsessions and Compulsions); preoccupation with neatness; thinking of certain sounds, images, words, or numbers.

  • Perform the same ritual repeatedly such as: hand washing; locking and unlocking doors; opening and closing cabinets and drawers; hoarding useless possessions; counting; repeating the same steps; excessive cleaning and tidying; constant need for approval; silently repeating nonsense words; skin picking; hoarding; hair pulling.

  • Person does not derive pleasure from performing the rituals, but does experience a brief respite from anxiety caused by the OCD intrusive thoughts.

  • The OCD intrusive thoughts and behaviors take up at least one hour per day, causing stress and interfering with daily life and social activities.

 

Related disorders include:

 

  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

  • Excoriation (Skin-Picking) Disorder

  • Hoarding Disorder

  • Trichotillomania (Hair-Pulling Disorder)

  • Substance and Medication Induced OCD and Related Disorder

  • Related Disorder Due to Medical Condition

 

Eating Disorders

 

Eating disorders are characterized by obsessive concerns with weight and disruptive eating patterns that negatively impact

 

physical and mental health.

 

Types of eating disorders treated include:

 

  • Anorexia

  • Bulimia

  • Binge-eating

  • Vomiting

 

Sexual Dysfunctions

 

A sexual problem, or sexual dysfunction, refers to a problem during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or

couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity.

 

These include:

 

  • Hypoactive sexual desire disorder 

  • Sexual aversion disorder (avoidance of or lack of desire for sexual intercourse)

  • Female sexual arousal disorder (failure of normal lubricating arousal response)

  • Male erectile disorder

  • Female orgasmic disorder (Anorgasmia)

  • Male orgasmic disorder (Anorgasmia)

  • Premature ejaculation

  • Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)

  • Vaginismus ( involuntary vaginal muscle spasm that makes any kind of vaginal penetration—including sexual intercourse—painful or impossible)
